CalPERS Fix for MSA Members (1994–2012): Turning "Miscellaneous" into Public Safety Time
No one fixed this since the error started in 1994. I took on the fight—and I'm getting it done for our MSA Sergeants and Lieutenants.
If you were hired 1994–2012 and had service coded as Miscellaneous when it should qualify as Public Safety, we'll reclassify that time so it counts under your CalPERS Safety formula.
One year (or more) of life back:
You can retire about a year earlier.
Bigger pension for that year:
Many members see their accrual rate for the corrected year move from ~1.5% (Misc.) to ~3% (Safety)—that's double the credit for that year, subject to your specific plan formula.
Accuracy and dignity:
Your record finally matches the work you actually performed.
MSA members hired 1994–2012 with any period misclassified as Miscellaneous despite performing Safety duties or later moving into a designated Safety class.
Have POST/academy completion and duty history consistent with Safety definitions.
Eligibility audit:
Hire date, class history, academy/POST, duty statements → pinpoint the retro window.
Authority package:
Assemble employer resolutions, job specs, plan provisions, and precedent to support reclassification.
Employer/Payroll actions:
Correct coding for the retro period; if needed, true-up only the employee rate difference (often pre-tax if active).
CalPERS submission:
File, track, and secure confirmation of Public Safety credit.
Member confirmation:
Verify your myCalPERS reflects the updated service credit.

Gather: hire dates, class history, POST/academy docs, duty statements, and your myCalPERS service breakdown.
This is the standard you can expect when you elect me to lead: identify the problem, build the case, and finish the job.
This fix means earlier retirement and a higher accrual rate for the corrected year(s).
Vote me in as your Vice President so I can begin the work—for you, for your family, and for the career you've already given so much to.
